yeah lol

get a 20" or 24" iMac, and get protools, then get some plugins for it, which can be found on the internet im sure.
then it's really just experimenting and getting to know how to use the program and whatever equipment you have for it.

honestly, nowadays getting a mac wont make a difference. Personally I would just build my own PC and use it only for recording. No internet.

Protools is what most people prefer. Beau uses HD but (correct me if I am wrong) has used LE on some of his previous projects.

i fucked around with it for a few hours and it was kinda difficult, but this was 3 years ago before i knew any of the terminology that they use and was pretty much completely winging it. so, your welcome for this very informative answer.

I don't know how many plugins are available for logic, but I know protools has a ton of plugins. I personally prefer analog shit, because digital signals sound to sterile to me. In the end protools, logic, nuendo, and cubase all do the same thing via a different package. If your mix is going to be rendered into a 44.1 disk then you really don't need to mix in HD because you are going to lose quality anyways. Pick whichever works best for you and offers what you want. I have plenty of friends that swear by cubase and plenty that swear by logic. I prefer protools. It is all personal preference.

EDIT: I mixed the songs on my band's myspace (www.myspace.com/bransonny) in protools HD. The school studio didn't have any analog units and had a very minimal selection of plugins. They had all the stock protools plugins plus the focusrite, joemeek, and bombfactory shit. Keep in mind that they only had really old KRKs for me to mix on and those particular monitors have a mid-spike voicing.

damnit, lol
James...
I've always used Cubase. That's just what I'm comfortable with.

Get an AKG Perception 200. Best all around condenser in its price range IMO. I use it for a lot of stuff.

search around for beau's post...when i get home i can try to find it. i remember him talking about all the gear he started out with. just letting you know, if you want something half decent it's going to cost you. you will need some hardware (i would suggest a m-audio firewire 410 or something similar to start..around $300...unless you need to record drums with full mics or something, but i doubt it) which comes with cubase i believe, and a couple decent mics. you would actually be surprised what you could do with only that.
lukey
cool thanx to you two!
beau
hi... sorry ive been away for a while.. but it seems like you guys have a handle on it.

if your question is "what should i get?" then you need to ask yourself "what is my budget?" because your budget is going to effect what is available to you. and in my opinion, recording is all about making the best of what is available to you.

for instance, if you were to ask me what console to buy, your budget would determine if i were to recommend a neve 8068 or a mackie 1604. or if you were to ask what mic to buy, i may suggest a u47 or a sm57. the budget unfortunately is usually the deciding factor.

so... if you can put together a list of what you already have, and a list of what you want to be able to accomplish, as well as a budget you are ready to spend, i can give you my opinion on what would be most suitable for your situation...

i hope this helps

peace

thanx for that! well i have some of the hardware (like mics and a mixer, an eq, and stuff like that, i have this all in my band's rehearsal room its not the best stuff but everything will be replaced with better stuff any time we have some money left, like we just got shure sm58s and a brand new mackie mixer) but the question was more about the software! but most of the guys recommend me protools so i am very likely to get that smile.gif
i cant tell about budget because where i live (mid-europe) these things are much mroe expensive than in the us (even guitars and so on, for instance you pay 400$ for a standard fender strat, i'd pay 650$)
on the computer/software id have a bigger budget because i need a new (modern tongue.gif) computer anyway! the decision is mac or pc! and later which software...

thanx to everyone
beau
well, as soon as you figure out what your budget is, i can be of help.. but it seems like you've got it figured out.

plus he made an EP with 3 of the duders from mineral. That is almost as legit as owning a PRS Tremonti SE guitar.
